Presenter: Dr. Mark Karaska

Mark Karaska served as a National Park Service Park Ranger in Yellowstone, Glacier, and Denali National Parks, where he was responsible for managing problem grizzly bears and responding to bear-human conflicts. Grizzly bears present unique management challenges in national parks. Their size, strength, intelligence, and unpredictable behavior can create dangerous encounters with hikers, campers, and other visitors. At the same time, grizzlies are protected wildlife and an important part of the natural ecosystems these parks were established to preserve.

In this presentation, Mark will explain how the National Park Service balances public safety with the protection and conservation of grizzly bears. He will share firsthand stories from his years as a Bear Management Ranger, including experiences tracking, encountering, tranquilizing, relocating, and, when necessary, euthanizing problem bears.

Come hear the stories and lessons of a ranger who worked on the front lines of one of the National Park Service’s most challenging—and fascinating—wildlife management responsibilities.
